With Thangka Artist Virgil Pauls of Kailash Studio in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada
This is a 4-part drawing course for those wishing to explore the rich sacred art of ancient India and Tibet. The Buddhist path to awakening is embodied by archetypes, both masculine and feminine. This is a unique opportunity to access this ancient traditional art form with thangka artist Virgil Pauls, student of internationally recognized master thangka artist, Andy Weber.

Aims of this course include how to correctly draw the template grid and outline of either Green Tara or the Bodhisattva Manjushri, how to draw the grid and outline of the deity's body, robes, ornaments seat, and then inking the sketched drawings using a brush. Participants will produce 1 finished piece, either Tara or Manjushri according to the student's preference (charts and other materials for both subjects will be provided to encourage further individual study). This course (or equivalent experience) will be a prerequisite for those wishing to pursue the intermediate or advanced thangka drawing courses offered here.
Instruction will include talks, with slideshow, introducing the symbolism of Indo-Tibetan sacred art in historical context. Participants will receive group instruction and demonstration, as well as time for practicing technique, and for questions. Class sizes will be small to allow individualized instruction and attention. Charts and background materials will be provided. Time will be set aside for individual instruction and skill building. Introduction to meditation and mantra practice will also be a part of preparing one's intention and concentration for a wholistic, integral body-breath-mind experience. Participants will be encountering a system of archetypal and universal symbolism designed as a road map for the spiritual path. The iconography of these male and female Bodhisattva forms is a mirror into the inner life; they represent the latent potential within each sentient being.
No previous art or meditation experience are necessary for this training. However, any existing skills in these disciplines would be an asset.
Material list: (please purchase all items on the list and bring to the first class)
1. Drawing paper or multi-media paper (acid free recommended), 14" x 17" or larger.
2. Tracing paper, 14" x 17"
3. Drawing board, 16" x 18" (or large enough to support larger paper size if you prefer)
4. Mechanical pencils (0.5 mm or 0.3 mm) with HB lead, or wood art pencils (HB, 2B and F)
5. Eraser or putty
6. Long Ruler (60cm or 24")
7. Compass
8. Masking tape
9. Fine point outlining brush (size 0, 00, or 000)
(Winsor & Newton (series 7, size 00), Kolinsky, or similar quality sable brushes are recommended. These can be costly, so if your budget doesn't permit this, there are also decent quality synthetic brushes available for less.)
10. Any acrylic black ink (e.g. Winsor & Newton), or any black drawing ink. (If the finished product is a black & white drawing, India Ink, or a traditional Chinese ink is superior. If one is inking a preliminary sketch for a full colour gouache painting, then a water proof black ink is preferable to prevent tainting the subsequent colour applications.)
11. Small water container (for wetting and cleaning brushes), and a small dish or plate (for an ink palette), porcelain is traditionally used and is good for training the point of the brush.
12. rag or tissue / paper towel
13. scrap paper for testing brush strokes & practice.
14. Artist's smock or apron
15. Sketch Book or Note Book (video of demonstrations and photos of example work will also be permitted)
The course will conclude with a short consecration puja to bless the completed drawings which will be marked on the back with mantras. Once this is done the drawing can be considered an emanation of the wisdom deity, and is a suitable object of veneration and devotion. (Correct protocols for the handling of sacred objects and texts will also be given.)
